Why Dental Hygiene & Therapy?
Hi, my name is Prabjot and I’m a final year Dental Hygiene and Therapy student at Kings College London. I’m looking forward to qualifying this year and starting my career as a dental hygienist/therapist. I enjoy connecting with fellow DHT students or prospective students, sharing advice and experiences, so please feel free to get in touch via social media.
Most people will say they always knew they wanted to work in a particular field from a very young age, however I was the complete opposite. I left school not knowing what I wanted to do or if I even wanted to go to university. I ended up taking a receptionist job at a local dental practice and it was then that I realised I wanted to work in dentistry.
I enjoyed the patient interaction and seeing how dentistry really can have a huge impact on people’s lives. After completing my dental nursing qualification and having the pleasure of working alongside a range of different dental hygienists and therapists, I was inspired to apply to study dental hygiene and therapy. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to Kings College London in 2019 and have loved every minute of the course so far. Both the clinical and theory aspect of the course can be intense at times but I enjoy every aspect of the course.
My advice to anyone considering applying for dental hygiene and therapy would be to try and get some work experience in the field, so you can really get a feel for what is involved. The course comprises of lots of theory as well as practical session, so it’s essential to try and stay as organised as possible. Everyone has different experiences of the course, try not to let that influence you, it took me numerous attempts before I found a learning style that worked for me. Most importantly, enjoy it! It is hard work but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the process.
