Why Dentistry?
Hi! My name is Tosin and I’m a second year dental student studying at Queen Mary University, London!
Why I chose to study dentistry
I chose to study dentistry because I’ve always had an interest in human anatomy and wanted to be a holistic care provider. With dentistry, you are able to build long-lasting relationships with patients changing their lives in more ways than we’d ever understand. The teeth and the oral cavity in general are a crucial part of our everyday lives. From smiling to speaking and eating, we use our mouths all day every day! To be able to have an impact in people’s lives and to help them with something that seems so small and trivial such as a single tooth but has such a huge positive effect on their lives speaks volumes to me and is something that I have always dreamed of.
A typical week for me:
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic my course has moved completely online for the foreseeable future. The positive however is that, I have lots of free time to make notes on everything I have covered so far this year. Normally every day is scheduled for a different module (e.g. human health and disease, dental materials, etc) and I tend to have 1 lecture or online activity per day at the moment. For the rest of the day, I often write notes, read or go through flashcards.
My advice for aspiring dentistry students
I would say to anyone who wants to study dentistry to just read as much as you can on it! Dentistry is so interesting and there are new advancements every single day. Also, I would say that doing work experience is so important, as for me it was the solidifying factor in my decision to pursue dentistry.
